FORTY-THREE

“The Flow?” Leo said as he drove us to Patty Caldwell’s—or Zuri Diamond’s—house. “Only in Hollywood could you take water torture and turn it into therapy.”

I had The Flow’s website on my phone and read some of it aloud. “Anxiety, high blood pressure, panic attacks, depression, PTSD? The Flow is for you! The Flow uses a combination of Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST), and ancient shamanic breathing techniques to achieve state-of-the-art results. Therapy sessions last one hour and result in muscle relaxation, better sleep, and decreased states of anxiety and depression.” My voice edged higher as I looked at Leo and said, “A one-hour session is four hundred bucks.”

“No, thanks. The cost would only increase my anxiety and depression.”

“Well, it looks like it’s working for Patty-slash-Zuri and Freddie. They live on Gramercy Place. Some of the houses in that neighborhood go for several million.”

Leo looked at me and smiled. “I just had a thought about a retirement job. I’ll advertise waterboarding for four hundred dollars an hour.”

I laughed. “Not a bad way to make a living.”

As it turned out, “Zuri” and Freddie lived in a contemporary three-story home, above the Sunset Strip, with terraces and an infinity pool. It was a spectacular rise from Patty showing up at her sister’s house two years earlier and asking for a handout. After introductions, it became obvious that Freddie was the brains behind The Flow.

“We have an introductory rate for our Flow tanks,” Freddie said. He was a thin man, probably around forty, with dark hair, and a beard that was fading to gray. “We have several other officers that come here for therapy.”

“Actually, we’re here about Janet,” Leo said, looking at Patty.

“Is she okay?” Patty asked. She was pretty, like her sister, with even features, blue eyes, a near-perfect figure, and long dark hair. “I haven’t seen her in months.”

Leo and I exchanged glances. He told Patty, “May we come in for a few minutes? I’ll explain what’s been going on.”

We were led through a wood and glass house built on several levels, with an open floor plan. The upper terrace looked out over Hollywood. We took seats, and Bernie settled beside me as I complimented them on their home. “This is quite beautiful, like something you would see in a magazine.”

Freddie started to talk about the construction details but was interrupted by Patty. “Tell me about Janet. Is she okay?”

“You haven’t seen what’s been happening on the news or Internet?” I asked.

“Except for receiving emails for bookings, we live in a no-screen environment,” Freddie said. “It increases our internal harmony.”

“Janet?” Patty said, obviously concerned.

“Your sister was kidnapped from her yacht four days ago. Her husband, Jess, and her friends, Linda and George Mason, were murdered.”

Patty’s blue eyes widened, and her voice pitched higher. “Kidnapped? Where did they take her?”

“Yesterday, a young woman showed up at Janet’s bank with her. They tried to wire several million dollars to an offshore account. Things didn’t go as planned. The woman left the bank with Janet, hijacked a car, and escaped.
